- Write clean, well-tested code; conduct code reviews; produce documentation; and solve complex technical challenges
- Define and evolve backend engineering standards, patterns and golden paths
- Drive decomposition of monolithic applications into well-bounded, domain-driven services
- Design and implement workflow and orchestration systems for complex, multi-step clinical and operational processes
- Build and maintain reliable CI/CD infrastructure for deployments and releases
- Use data-driven analysis to determine when infrastructure or services are warranted
- Design and run experiments with emerging technologies and document recommendations
- Contribute to automated regression, performance and resiliency testing
- Instrument observability, author runbooks and participate in incident response and resolution
- Champion improvements to software engineering practices and standards
- Mentor engineers across experience levels
- Collaborate with frontend engineering, product and design on API contracts and end-to-end experiences
- Support engineering team growth through interviews and code reviews
Requirements
What you’ll need- 8+ years of experience designing, building, deploying and scaling API-driven systems
- Extensive knowledge of cloud architecture principles and patterns
- Extensive knowledge of distributed systems, fault tolerance and resiliency patterns
- Extensive knowledge of API best practices, including contract-first design (e.g. OpenAPI/AsyncAPI), versioning strategies and backwards compatibility
- Extensive knowledge of event-driven architecture patterns, including messaging, streaming and eventual consistency (e.g. Kafka, SNS/SQS)
- Extensive knowledge of workflow and orchestration engines for modelling complex, long-running business processes (e.g. Temporal, AWS Step Functions, Conductor)
- Fluency in at least one modern backend language (e.g. Kotlin, Java, Go, TypeScript)
- Strong experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL
- Strong experience running production workloads on public cloud platforms, particularly AWS
- Strong experience with Linux, Docker and Kubernetes
- Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform
