About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Apply your strong analytical experience to inform decision-making in the energy sector.
  • Work closely with policy teams to deliver analysis and insights to inform policy design and advice.
  • Lead the delivery of a robust and compelling evidence base to inform key policy decisions in the energy sector.
  • Manage a complex modelling and analytical work programme, ensuring effective delivery of the Ministry’s energy modelling services.
  • Lead the ongoing development of the Ministry’s core modelling tools.
  • Analyse potential futures of energy supply, demand, and greenhouse emissions.
  • Produce analysis and evidence to inform policy development and design, including analysing policy options and monitoring how policies are tracking.
  • Translate requirements into effective solutions to provide the evidence needed to inform advice to Ministers.
  • Build relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders within MBIE, across Government, and in the energy sector.
  • Commit to innovation and continuous improvement, generating new ideas and ways of doing things to ensure the Ministry’s core modelling tools and methods remain fit-for-purpose.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Significant experience in classical modelling, forecasting, econometrics, or a closely related discipline is essential.
  • Demonstrated experience applying modelling, forecasting, econometric, or analytical skills to real-world problems in the public or private sector.
  • Strong ability to work with complex data, produce robust analysis, and communicate insights clearly to a range of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience leading analytical projects, managing delivery, and working collaboratively with stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver fit-for-purpose outputs.
  • Experience working with policy teams or contributing analysis that supports policy development, monitoring, or advice would be an advantage.
  • A background in economics, applied economics, or an understanding of economic concepts would be beneficial.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in R, or a comparable statistical programming language, with the ability to support reproducible, high-quality analysis.
  • A collaborative, self-starting approach, with the ability to deliver high-quality results under pressure and in a changing environment.
  • You MUST have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
