About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Identify, develop, and lead systemic litigation and appellate advocacy to improve the health, safety, and economic security of low-income Michiganders
  • Bring affirmative litigation and pursue appeals in state and federal court
  • Identify and implement strategies to challenge racialized systems and practices
  • Collaborate with subject-matter attorneys, Michigan legal aid programs, community organizations, and state and national advocacy organizations
  • Organize trainings and create resources for legal aid and poverty advocates on systemic litigation
  • Provide legal and technical support to legislators, policymakers, community organizations, legal services attorneys, and other poverty law advocates on racial justice issues
  • Strengthen Michigan’s legal aid community through co-counseling, training, technical assistance, and practical litigation resources

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • J.D.
  • Licensed or eligible to become licensed to practice law in Michigan
  • Minimum 5 years of legal experience
  • Demonstrated litigation experience
  • Appellate experience
  • Ability to assume significant leadership in impact litigation
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial justice
  • Knowledge of law providing potential claims to challenge racial injustice and disparities in poverty law
  • Ability to work with client groups, community-based groups, and coalitions
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strategic thinking and creativity
