About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Engage in impact litigation and appellate work
  • Identify, develop, and lead litigation strategies and advocacy efforts
  • Challenge racialized systems and practices
  • Provide legal support to legislators and organizations on racial justice issues
  • Collaborate with MPLP support attorneys on anti-racism strategies
  • Build and support coalitions for race equity advocacy
  • Work with media on racial justice issues
  • Write advocacy materials and reports
  • Represent MPLP’s interests in public forums and task forces

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • J.D. and licensed (or eligible to become licensed) to practice law in Michigan
  • Minimum 5 years legal experience
  • Ability to assume significant leadership in impact litigation and advocacy campaigns
  • Demonstrated litigation experience, appellate experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial justice
  • Knowledge of laws challenging racial injustice and disparities in poverty law
  • Experience in legal aid, civil rights, or social justice organization
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong organizational skills, strategic thinker, and creative
  • Lived personal experience of racism and racial injustice
  • Ability to facilitate and participate in discussions around race and systemic racism
  • Commitment to advancing justice for those affected by poverty and racism
