About the role

  • Performs annual bridge inspection programs including National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS), Element, Underwater, Non-Redundant Steel Tension Member, Special Feature Inspection and Load Rating Inspections for the assigned geographic area
  • Schedules personnel and equipment to ensure inspection schedules are met
  • Ensures effective expenditure of budgetary funds
  • Ensures technical expertise necessary to perform bridge inspections
  • Team Leader certification is required before approving bridge inspections
  • Trains, provides guidance, and mentors newer personnel within the bridge section on proper inspection techniques and safe methods of bridge inspections
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees
  • Performs other duties as required

Requirements

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois
  • Four years of experience in civil engineering
  • Six years of experience in civil engineering, maintenance, and/or construction including four years of supervisory responsibility of which three years should be in highway engineering (preferred)
  • Qualified as a Bridge Inspection Team Leader in Illinois (preferred)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (preferred)
  • Requires a valid driver’s license
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening
  • Requires the ability to take and pass the NHI Class 130056 Safety Inspections of In-Service Bridges, as well as obtain 6 months of bridge inspection experience
  • Requires the ability to obtain the Bridge Inspection Team Leader Certification in Illinois within 12 months after hire date
  • Requires the ability to climb and inspect various types of bridges
  • Requires districtwide travel
