About the role
- Performs annual bridge inspection programs including National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS), Element, Underwater, Non-Redundant Steel Tension Member, Special Feature Inspection and Load Rating Inspections for the assigned geographic area
- Schedules personnel and equipment to ensure inspection schedules are met
- Ensures effective expenditure of budgetary funds
- Ensures technical expertise necessary to perform bridge inspections
- Team Leader certification is required before approving bridge inspections
- Trains, provides guidance, and mentors newer personnel within the bridge section on proper inspection techniques and safe methods of bridge inspections
- Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules
- Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees
- Performs other duties as required
Requirements
- Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois
- Four years of experience in civil engineering
- Six years of experience in civil engineering, maintenance, and/or construction including four years of supervisory responsibility of which three years should be in highway engineering (preferred)
- Qualified as a Bridge Inspection Team Leader in Illinois (preferred)
- Strong oral and written communication skills (preferred)
- Requires a valid driver’s license
- Requires successful completion of a background screening
- Requires the ability to take and pass the NHI Class 130056 Safety Inspections of In-Service Bridges, as well as obtain 6 months of bridge inspection experience
- Requires the ability to obtain the Bridge Inspection Team Leader Certification in Illinois within 12 months after hire date
- Requires the ability to climb and inspect various types of bridges
- Requires districtwide travel
