Key responsibilities & impact

Reviews medical records to identify pertinent diagnoses and procedures relative to the patient's health care encounter
Selects the principal diagnosis and principal procedure using UHDDS definition
Ensures appropriate DRG assignment
Abstracts appropriate information from the medical record based on the client guidelines
Meet productivity and quality performance requirements
Utilizes company applications to enter charts coded in real-time
Solicits clarification from the physician regarding ambiguous or conflicting documentation
Participates in team meetings and training as required
May participate in training or shadowing of other coders
Maintains current knowledge of the Coding Clinic, CPT Assistant, and Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting

Requirements

What you’ll need

5 years of experience coding a variety of Gen Surg procedures
CPC, COC, CIC, CCA, CCS, CCS-P, RHIT or RHIA certifications
Epic/3M experience
Minimum 3+ years of surgery experience coding procedures including but not limited to: tonsillectomy, tumor excision, tracheostomy, lymph node removal, thyroid lobectomy, skin graft, laminotomy, facetectomy, foraminotomy, herniated disk repair, vertebral augmentation, spinal fixation, allograft, etc.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Understands medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, surgical technology, pharmacology and disease processes
Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPS and CPT coding principles and guidelines, reimbursement systems, federal, state and payor-specific regulations and policies pertaining to documentation, coding and billing.
