About the role

  • Edit raw video from reporters and photographers into polished, engaging one- to three-minute videos, often under tight deadlines
  • Collaborate with newsroom leaders to identify key stories and determine the strongest visual approach, including coordination with photo teams
  • Maintain a daily pipeline of incoming video content and communicate timing or priority changes with the audience team
  • Identify stories and topics well-suited for social and short-form video and help ensure those opportunities are fully realized
  • Research, pitch and produce original video content that is informative, engaging and aligned with HCMG’s journalism standards
  • Optimize video for distribution across platforms, including social, web and search, with strong attention to headlines, thumbnails, metadata and SEO best practices
  • Work collaboratively across departments during breaking news and planned coverage to ensure timely and effective visual storytelling
  • Monitor performance metrics and apply insights to improve real-time decision-making and long-term video strategy
  • Help build, organize and maintain a shared library of video assets
  • Participate in daily and enterprise news meetings to better understand story development and audience needs

Requirements

  • Experience editing digital video, preferably in a newsroom or fast-paced media environment
  • Strong writing, editing and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to shoot high-quality video when needed, as well as work effectively with raw footage
  • Deep understanding of short-form and social video editing, particularly for platforms such as Instagram, YouTube Shorts and similar channels
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented and comfortable managing multiple projects under deadline
  • Technically curious and solutions-oriented, with the ability to troubleshoot quickly
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including breaking news and special content opportunities
