About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Enhance instructional effectiveness and positively impact student learning, achievement, and well-being across the P-12 system
  • Provide student-focused, collaborative support to teachers through classroom and virtual synchronous and asynchronous coaching
  • Engage teachers in reflective dialogue and model high-leverage instructional practices
  • Use student evidence to inform instructional decision-making
  • Support implementation of the Nova Scotia English Language Arts curriculum for Grades P–2
  • Provide coaching, modeling, and professional learning in evidence-based literacy practices across foundational skills, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing
  • Collaborate with teachers to design, co-teach, and refine literacy lessons integrating structured literacy, metalinguistic awareness, and disciplinary literacy
  • Guide use of literacy screeners, benchmark assessments, and short-cycle data for instruction and intervention
  • Model effective P–2 literacy routines, including word study, read aloud with think aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and writing workshop
  • Facilitate Collaborative Learning Team discussions around student work, assessment evidence, and instructional responses
  • Ensure strong Tier 1 instruction aligned with MTSS and support planning for Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions
  • Lead and contribute to regional professional development sessions for P–2 educators
  • Provide instructional resources such as lesson frameworks, anchor charts, exemplar texts, and rubrics aligned with curriculum outcomes
  • Build teacher capacity to integrate literacy instruction across science, social studies, math, and other subject areas
  • Help educators identify student strengths and gaps using data and plan responsive instruction
  • Stay current with research and disciplinary literacy
  • Contribute to a system-wide bank of literacy resources, strategies, and exemplars
  • Align expectations and curricular outcomes across schools and grade levels through horizontal and vertical planning
  • Perform other related duties as required

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Masters Degree completed, or in progress in Literacy, Leadership, Assessment, Curriculum, or related field
  • Minimum 5 years experience teaching at P-2 levels
  • Demonstrated leadership roles in the school and region
  • Experience completing thorough literacy assessments on students and aligning evidence-based teaching to assessment results
  • In-depth knowledge of literacy processing, acquisition, and assessment
  • Experience working with and leading Collaborative Learning Teams and Teaching Support Teams using student data and planned responses in short cycles
  • Experience implementing strong literacy instruction within an MTSS framework
  • Successful evidence of leading and organizing professional development
  • Ability to foster collaboration among teachers, administrators, and/or support staff
  • Strong facilitation skills for leading professional learning for adults
  • Flexible working in various work settings and situations
  • Knowledge of the Nova Scotia Teaching Standards
  • Compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Newly hired employees must provide satisfactory Child Abuse Register Check and Criminal Record / Vulnerable Sector Checks
  • Current checks may be attached if less than 3 months old
