About the role

  • Be a courageous safety leader and adhere to and champion the Teck Way in the application of safety, social, and environmental best practices in line with Teck’s rules and procedures.
  • Understand the design, operating limits, current, and forecasted conditions of the facilities under stewardship.
  • Act as a Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer at closed tailings facilities in Canada.
  • Share current and forecasted conditions, assessing facility suitability for use, and highlight the critical work that needs to be completed with operational owners and relevant groups.
  • Report blocking issues regarding inadequacies in work execution, risk mitigation or management, credible failure mode prevention, management and controls, facility integrity, or safety, up to and including the Accountable Executive as the need arises.
  • Purview over site(s) tailings governance programs, including instrumentation data and visual inspections.
  • Provide technical counsel and proficiency in tailings and water enclosure structures.
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams on TSF-related topics: operations, planning, regulatory affairs, social performance, and environment.
  • Coordinate and review work by external consultants, including handling the EOR and their contract, and be the primary point of contact for this work on behalf of Teck.
  • Participate in dam safety inspections, reviews, the Independent Tailings Review Board and Corporate governance reviews.
  • Coordinate internal reviews and engagement with internal Teck senior expertise.
  • Assist in the identification, mitigation and reduction of tailings hazards and risks.
  • Implement recommendations from inspections, reviews and audits.
  • Participate in dialogue with Communities of Interest (regulators, Indigenous peoples, communities, etc.) with respect to risk evaluations, emergency preparedness and responses, and risk mitigation projects.
  • Support short- and long-term projects related to structure performance, including supervision of consultants and contractors.
  • Enact government and corporate responsibilities regarding TSF structure performance, ensuring ongoing communication with the Accountable Executive aligned with facility risks and needs.
  • Lead updates to the TSF-related risk register revisions following Teck’s most recent guidelines.
  • Provide domain expertise to associated tasks, projects or groups that also engage in tailings-related work scopes (e.g. SERA, environment, projects, MERPs).
  • Participate in annual Mine Emergency Response Plan (MERP) updates and tailings emergency response exercises.
  • Ensure the accuracy of external messaging related to TWRSs on their sites (e.g. regulatory reporting/communication, community engagement, corporate reporting).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical, Geological, Civil, Environmental, or Mining Engineering, preferably with specialization in Geotechnical / Tailings Engineering.
  • Eligible or registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC) and potentially other jurisdictions in Canada.
  • At least 8 years relevant and dynamic geotechnical experience, including a recent geotechnical / tailings role with responsibilities for tailings and water retaining structures.
  • Master’s Degree or equivalent experience in engineering is considered advantageous.
  • Experience in data analysis, dam safety inspections, geotechnical drilling, and project management.
  • Experience with advanced surveillance methods.
  • Outstanding skills in organization, research, planning, writing, and communication, particularly when engaging with senior leaders.
  • Proactive and able to take initiative, work independently or in a team, and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Solid understanding of Microsoft Office and M365.
  • Knowledge of GeoExplorer, AutoCAD, various stability and seepage packages, FLAC or similar and GIS software is considered an asset.
  • Valid class 5 drivers licence.
  • Knowledge of BC’s Health, Safety and Reclamation Code is an asset.
