About the role
- The master's thesis involves a systematic analysis of the existing epitaxy datasets at Fraunhofer IAF with the aim of developing concrete, actionable proposals for AI-based analyses (data preparation, suitable model classes, evaluation concepts, infrastructure/tooling) to reduce experimental effort in developing new material compositions and accelerate the implementation of new ideas.
- You will perform exploratory analysis of the existing epitaxy datasets from various systems and identify potential analysis targets, e.g., prediction, anomaly detection, process understanding.
- Based on literature review and leveraging expert knowledge within the Fraunhofer network, you will assess suitable AI methods and evaluation metrics for feasibility with respect to the available data.
- You will develop a concrete implementation plan (data pipeline, model architectures, validation strategy, required resources) with recommendations and prioritized next steps.
Requirements
- Enrolled master's student in natural sciences, engineering, materials science, computer science, or a related field
- Initial experience applying various neural network architectures to build simple AI models for processing empirical data
- Knowledge in materials science, crystallography, chemistry, or solid-state physics is beneficial
- Good German and English language skills
- Enjoyment of experimental work
- Teamwork skills, openness, and motivation for independent, goal-oriented work
Benefits
- Personal supervision on an equal footing and support from experienced scientists and specialists throughout your thesis
- Modern laboratory facilities in a new lab building
- Flexible working hours compatible with your studies
- Collaboration within an interdisciplinary team, including participation in current projects with clear objectives
- An open, team-oriented organizational culture that gives you the opportunity to contribute your own ideas
- Diverse and exciting tasks within an internationally renowned research institution
