About the role

  • The team develops simulations, theoretical models, image processing software and adaptive optics systems.
  • Aim of the internship is to study the possibility of wavefront sensing using angular selectivity properties of bandpass filters to locally modulate the amplitude of a wavefront.
  • Local slopes of a perturbed wavefront can be sensed using such a filter and a camera.
  • From the measured slopes, the well-established algorithms used in Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensing can be used to reconstruct the wavefront.
  • Investigation of the applications, limits, and ideas for improvements of this new technology are the main focus of this 6-month internship.
  • You will be provided with extensive COTS optical materials and space on an optical table to build a demonstrator.
  • You will be asked to control a position controller to perform repeatable measurements within the scope of characterization studies.
  • You will be asked to extrapolate the results to identify alternative technologies that could benefit the angular-selective wavefront sensor.

Requirements

  • Enrollment in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics or a comparable discipline
  • Basic knowledge of optical systems and wavefront theory
  • Experience with optical laboratory work and alignment techniques
  • Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW)
  • Interest in adaptive optics and free-space optical communications
  • Enjoyment of hands-on experimental work and learning new technologies
  • Good command of English (written and spoken)
Benefits
  • Central location: Well connected to public transportation networks
  • Hands-on research projects: Collaborating with industry partners and application of research results in real-life scenarios.
  • Individual supervision: Benefit from our professional accompaniment and an open, communicative exchange within the team.
  • Exciting tasks and creative freedom: Take responsibility and contribute your own ideas
