About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Design and develop RF analogue and mixed-signal electronics for complex engineering systems
- Design RF transceiver and front-end architectures using monolithic RF chipsets, including MMIC, SiP and SoC-style devices
- Develop RF schematics, component selections and circuit designs according to system requirements
- Design and implement RF impedance matching networks, including L/C matching
- Translate RF component datasheets, application circuits, biasing requirements and matching-network recommendations into practical designs
- Collaborate with PCB layout engineers on signal integrity, grounding, shielding, routing and manufacturability
- Integrate RF blocks and subsystems into larger electronic and system architectures
- Develop and execute RF design verification and validation activities
- Conduct hands-on laboratory testing using spectrum analysers, VNAs, RF signal generators, power meters and oscilloscopes
- Analyse measured data to troubleshoot and improve RF designs
- Investigate performance issues and debug hardware, layout and system interfaces
- Produce schematics, design calculations, design notes, test plans, test procedures, verification and validation reports, and test results
- Collaborate with test and validation teams to ensure performance requirements are met
- Support RF device configuration, control and system integration with firmware/software engineers
- Support design reviews, technical investigations and engineering problem-solving
- Contribute to engineering processes, standards and best practices
Requirements
What you’ll need- Solid knowledge of RF principles, including signal propagation, RF link budgets, noise, dynamic range, gain and attenuation, filtering, RF performance metrics, and basic RF regulations
- Ability to interpret RF test results and resolve design issues
- Ability to interpret RF component datasheets and translate manufacturer recommendations into practical circuit designs
- Strong problem-solving and debugging capability
- Knowledge of relevant RF design standards and regulatory requirements
- Significant practical RF design and laboratory experience
- Recent experience with RF simulation and modelling tools, particularly CST and Ansys HFSS
- Experience in defence, aerospace, telecommunications or other high-reliability engineering sectors
- Experience with RF systems in challenging or safety-critical environments
- Experience taking RF designs through development, verification and production
- Proven experience designing and validating RF analogue and mixed-signal electronics
- Hands-on experience designing RF transceivers using MMIC, SiP or SoC-style RF devices
- Demonstrable experience with RF impedance matching, including L/C matching and matching networks
- Experience producing electronic schematics and working with PCB layout engineers
- Practical RF design validation in a laboratory environment
- Experience using spectrum analysers, VNAs, signal generators and RF power measurement equipment
- Experience integrating RF blocks into larger electronic or system-level architectures
- Experience collaborating with RF/electronics, PCB layout, test and validation, and firmware/software engineers
- Strong technical documentation skills
- Ability to be based on the UK mainland and travel periodically to Belfast in blocks of a few weeks
