About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Work as part of a team across concept design, demonstration, development, qualification, production, and customer in-service support
  • Manage design evolution to meet customer requirements
  • Clear detail production drawings for BS8888 conformance and manufacturability
  • Lead DFMEA activities and approve production processes and tooling
  • Specify and review structural, thermal, and ballistic analyses
  • Specify, monitor, and report rocket motor trials
  • Lead trials readiness reviews and formal design reviews
  • Produce technical presentations, product specifications, technical reports, and design documentation
  • Ensure validation testing before formal qualification
  • Produce the Certificate of Design, qualification reports, compliance matrix, and safety case
  • Lead the customer technical interface with missile primes and end users
  • Lead technical investigations and liaise with business teams, manufacturers, and suppliers
  • Arrange and manage structural testing, rocket motor firings, and laboratory-scale testing
  • Disassemble and assess fired rocket motor hardware
  • Liaise with specialists in CAD, stress, thermal, ballistic, propellant, materials, trials, production engineering, and project management

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Formal qualification, minimum HND or equivalent, in mechanical, aeronautical, physics, or related engineering discipline; alternatively, a fully time-served engineer with recognised apprenticeship and/or equivalent demonstrable experience
  • Ability to gain SC level of clearance
  • Sound understanding of engineering mathematics, stressing, metals, polymers, and manufacturing techniques
  • Interest and aptitude in rocket motor design theory and practical engineering
  • Ability to evaluate technical information across disciplines with high attention to detail
  • Ability to present complex problems clearly to specialist and non-specialist engineers
  • Excellent document and report writing skills
  • Trials or assessment testing experience, such as structural testing or vibration testing
  • Computer literacy and sound knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Office
  • Understanding of DFMEA, Design to Cost, and Design for Manufacture principles
  • Proven ability to manage projects through the engineering development lifecycle
  • Experience developing products to customer requirements in an engineering team environment
  • Experience with safety-critical products and regulatory standards such as DEF STAN 07-085
  • Good project management experience and familiarity with P6 Primavera
  • Experience with bids and commercial management in Defence, Automotive, or Manufacturing Engineering
  • Experience operating within EN9100 or a Quality Management System culture
  • Ability to manage time and prioritise tasks
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
