About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Conduct one-on-one and group education sessions with providers about billing trends, coding requirements, and best practices
  • Reinforce documentation standards supporting accurate code selection and reimbursement
  • Translate complex coding and reimbursement guidelines into practical guidance tailored to provider workflows
  • Serve as the primary contact for providers in the education program
  • Respond to provider inquiries about coding guidelines, documentation requirements, and reimbursement policies
  • Build trust and credibility through respectful, transparent, solution-oriented communication
  • Manage challenging provider conversations using de-escalation techniques
  • Balance compliance enforcement with a supportive educational approach
  • Audit outpatient medical records for CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10 accuracy and compliance with payer and regulatory requirements
  • Identify coding variation, documentation deficiencies, and compliance risks
  • Develop audit findings, summaries, and provider-specific feedback reports with actionable recommendations
  • Ensure alignment with AMA CPT®, CMS, NCCI, and payer-specific policies

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 5+ years of outpatient coding, auditing, or compliance experience
  • Active AAPC certification such as CPC or CPMA, or AHIMA certification such as CCS, CCS-P, RHIT, or RHIA
  • Extensive knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10 coding systems
  • Knowledge of CMS and payer reimbursement methodologies
  • Demonstrated experience auditing E/M services and other outpatient procedures
  • Ability to explain complex coding and reimbursement concepts clearly and effectively
  • Ability to navigate sensitive conversations professionally and empathetically
  • Proven ability to manage and resolve challenging provider interactions
  • Ability to understand and communicate provider billing trend metrics
  • Ability to tailor messaging to provider specialty, experience, and receptiveness
  • Preferred: experience in provider education or clinical documentation improvement (CDI)
  • Preferred: experience working directly with physicians, advanced practice providers, and behavioral health clinicians
  • Preferred: background in healthcare analytics or performance improvement initiatives
  • A brief coding/auditing assessment may be included in the interview process
