About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead Construction Environmental Manager services on major infrastructure and energy projects during construction
- Act as the primary environmental representative on-site
- Advise and support construction teams, contractors, and project management personnel
- Ensure construction complies with consent conditions, permits, licences, approved management plans, and project commitments
- Implement and manage Construction Environmental Management Plans and topic-specific environmental management plans
- Monitor environmental commitments, mitigation measures, and legal obligations
- Conduct site inspections, compliance audits, and environmental monitoring
- Investigate environmental incidents, non-conformances, complaints, and near misses
- Maintain environmental compliance records and documentation
- Manage risks involving protected species, water quality, waste, pollution, noise, air quality, and biodiversity
- Deliver environmental inductions, toolbox talks, and awareness sessions
- Coordinate monitoring programmes and mitigation and enhancement measures
- Liaise with clients, contractors, specialists, regulators, and other stakeholders
- Prepare compliance reports, performance dashboards, audit findings, and management updates
- Support regulator inspections, client audits, and independent compliance reviews
- Mentor junior environmental professionals
- Contribute to business development and proposal preparation
Requirements
What you’ll need- Experience in construction environmental management, environmental compliance, environmental advisory, or project environmental delivery within the UK infrastructure sector
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Geography, Ecology, Engineering, or a related discipline
- Experience supporting or leading environmental management during construction of major infrastructure projects
- Strong understanding of environmental legislation, regulatory compliance, and environmental management systems
- Experience implementing and monitoring Construction Environmental Management Plans and environmental controls
- Knowledge of Environmental Impact Assessment commitments and practical mitigation and monitoring implementation
- Experience with environmental audits, inspections, compliance assessments, and incident investigations
- Understanding of pollution prevention, ecology, biodiversity, water quality, waste, noise, air quality, and protected species management
- Experience collaborating with contractors, construction managers, engineers, project managers, and environmental specialists
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
- Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel and work on project sites
- Experience in transmission and distribution, renewable energy, hydrogen, or other major infrastructure projects preferred
- Professional membership of IEMA, CIWEM, CIEEM, CEnv, or equivalent desirable
- Internal or Lead Auditor qualification desirable
- Knowledge of ISO 14001 desirable
- Experience with regulatory inspections and relevant UK authorities desirable
- Line management, mentoring, or supervisory experience desirable
- Experience in principal contractor or EPC contractor environments desirable
