About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and schedules
- Set up experiments as prescribed by the principal investigator
- Conduct studies in fruit flies (Drosophila) investigating how neural circuits process information
- Perform dissections and immunostaining of fly brains, behavioral assays, optogenetic manipulations, and in vivo imaging of neural activity
- Assist with building experimental hardware or writing software, depending on interests and skills
- Maintain fly stocks and perform general laboratory tasks
- Participate in laboratory maintenance, including sterilization, equipment cleaning, supply ordering, inventory, and media preparation
- Maintain records, files, and logs in laboratory notebooks and computer databases
- Compile study data and results for publications, grants, and seminar presentations
- Work closely with the principal investigator
- Perform related responsibilities as required by the principal investigator
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in a scientific field OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training
- Previous research experience
- Background in a STEM field such as biology or neuroscience
- Experience working with Drosophila, using neuroscience techniques, and/or programming is favorably considered
- Good organizational and problem-solving skills
- Ability to multitask
- Attention to detail
- A one- to two-year commitment is expected
- Ability to work with, take precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents may be required
- Cover letter describing scientific background and interest in the lab
