About the role

  • The Senior Associate Director (S.A.D.), Direct Mail Marketing, is responsible for planning, implementation, and reporting on digital direct marketing strategies for The Carter Center.
  • They manage digital fundraising for a portfolio of donors who give under $1,000 annually, as well as providing support in approaches to mid-level and planned giving donors.
  • The Senior Associate Director reports to the Chief Development Officer (CDO), Direct Marketing, and through working with other development staff, program teams, and other staff across the Center, the S.A.D. develops and implements fundraising and stewardship strategies, including campaign strategy implementation, and reporting.
  • The Senior Associate Director is responsible for sourcing data and case studies to inform decision making and innovation; campaign quality control; and results reporting that yields actionable information.
  • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for achieving specific goals and objectives of direct mail campaigns and donor development programs covering existing donor bases and new strategic growth initiatives.
  • Maintain knowledge of donor demographics/psychographics; develop, track, and adjust fundraising strategies with the Chief Development Officer to meet goals.
  • Manage cultivation and stewardship of direct mail donors, including planning, materials, acknowledgments, reports, and gift processing instructions.
  • Coordinate with Development and Communications staff to align campaigns with other outreach and collateral.
  • Monitor spending to ensure adherence to budget.
  • Stay current on direct marketing trends to inform budgets; collect and organize data for accurate narrative and financial reports.
  • Direct and edit copy from mail writers; write limited cultivation materials.
  • Ensure all Carter Center experts and stakeholders approve direct mail materials.
  • Maintain the DMI donor database; support the Chief Development Officer in troubleshooting syncs with Luminate Online and Raiser’s Edge.
  • Assist the Chief Development Officer with special projects to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • May supervise, orient, and train department interns or temps.
  • Maintains compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Pursues ongoing professional development to stay current on fundraising and marketing trends.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and four years of experience in fundraising or related field OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Significant experience managing direct mail acquisition and retention campaigns at a non-profit or on behalf of non-profit clients at a marketing agency.
  • Thorough understanding of direct marketing concepts, including A/B and multivariate testing.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of SharePoint is a plus.
  • Advanced knowledge of CRM systems or donor databases.
  • Knowledge of DMI is a plus.
  • Experience working with USPS, direct mail printing and production vendors, and caging facilities.
  • Able to write and edit direct mail materials that resonate with donor audiences and adhere to brand standards.
  • Must have a solid understanding of budget development and financial reporting.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills, be detail-oriented, and be able to work collaboratively as well as independently with minimum supervision.
  • Must be a team player and energized by the Carter Center's non-profit mission.
