About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Support the review and analysis of tax returns and workpapers, identifying technical issues and opportunities for further research and structuring considerations
- Proactively research tax law changes, emerging issues, and industry trends, with a focus on understanding the technical implications on real estate structures and transactions
- Draft technical memoranda and communicate complex tax concepts in a clear, practical manner to internal stakeholders and clients
- Responsible for research and analysis of various federal income tax issues, including real estate tax, partnerships, REITs, S corporations, C corporations, timing issues and accounting methods, and other matters
- Transactional analysis and tax structuring related to the acquisition, restructuring, and disposition of real estate assets in joint venture, fund and REIT/blocker structures
- Manage REIT tax structuring and due diligence projects for real estate acquisition transactions
- Consult and advise on like-kind exchanges and reverse like-kind exchanges focusing on tax implications with respect to boot and liabilities
- Assist with the review of fund documents, joint venture/lower-tier partnership agreements and the tax consequences of the economic agreements (tax allocations, distribution preferences, etc.)
- Review of tax projections, tax workpapers and tax returns for clients in the real estate industry including partnerships and REITs
- Monitor and review legislative and administrative updates impacting real estate, REITs, real estate private equity, and debt fund clients, including development of related internal and external content
- Draft Firm-wide alerts on current developments in federal income tax
- Assist with Firm-wide trainings in federal income tax
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent field is required
- 3 - 5 years of public accounting experience, with exposure to real estate, partnerships, or flow-through taxation.
- CPA or IRS Enrolled Agent Certification Preferred/Desired Qualifications: Advanced tax degrees (J.D., LL.M.) or relevant technical experience are considered a plus but not required
- Experience using GoSystems or CCH Axcess tax software
