About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision
  • Develop engineering skills and the ability to work with greater independence
  • Work with staff engineers to manage equipment reliability and perform analysis and design of transmission lines, structures, protection and controls systems, and physical/electrical components
  • Assist with electric distribution design, distribution system planning, distribution system operations, distribution asset management, and distribution project management
  • Manage and maintain equipment, assist with grid planning and sectionalization, complete equipment installation/replacement designs, and provide oversight of the distribution system
  • Work with project engineers and managers to develop, design, construct, and start up power generation and energy storage technologies
  • Mentor with engineers in regulated power plants and work on generation facility safety, efficiency, system performance, reliability, cost, and environmental compliance projects
  • Gain experience with plant systems engineering, maintenance, energy production, inspections, calibrations, and equipment performance
  • Evaluate load additions, perform transmission planning and contingency analysis, and develop power system models
  • Contribute to projects supporting system reliability and future grid needs

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Must have previous internship or co-op experience with Duke Energy
  • Must have obtained a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles
  • Understanding of basic practices for researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making recommendations, and presenting recommendations
  • Ability to deal with individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management
  • Experience in the utility industry
  • Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
  • Some business units may require visits to field sites and/or plants
  • Preferred majors include Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Engineering Technology, Industrial & Systems Engineering, Construction Management, Chemical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering
