About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across district and national teams to ensure statutory and community work is connected, consistent, and impactful.
  • Lead statutory processes and provide high quality advice that supports meaningful conservation outcomes across the region.
  • Assess Permission applications, interpret and apply conservation legislation, contribute to Resource Management Act (RMA) processes, and offer well-reasoned advice to managers and decision-makers.
  • Help strengthen DOC’s relationships with Treaty partners, concessionaires and community conservation groups.
  • Ensure statutory and community work in the region is connected, consistent and impactful.
  • Build and maintain relationships with Treaty partners, community groups, and concessionaires.
  • Lead and deliver statutory and community work programmes.
  • Collaborate with technical experts and district teams.
  • Manage complex concession relationships.
  • Mentor colleagues and support capability building across the team.
  • Represent DOC in cross agency and community engagement initiatives.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Experience working in a statutory or regulatory environment, ideally with community engagement
  • Understanding of conservation and resource management legislation (such as the Conservation Act, Wildlife Act, Reserves Act, Resource Management Act etc), and the ability to interpret and apply policy and planning documents
  • Excellent communication and relationship skills
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills, with clear and concise writing ability
  • Experience planning and delivering medium complexity projects
  • A tertiary qualification (or equivalent experience) in resource or environmental management, or legal studies
  • A current full New Zealand driver licence.
