About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Own the technical design and implementation of complex FinTech and payment-related systems
Make architectural decisions and establish engineering standards and patterns
Build and maintain APIs, integrations, services, and data systems
Design, code, review, debug, test, document, and ship software
Solve problems involving payments, financial data, transactions, reconciliation, and third-party integrations
Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to translate business requirements into technical solutions
Identify technical risks and improve reliability, scalability, security, and performance
Mentor and influence engineers through code reviews and technical guidance
Maintain detailed payment-system architecture documentation
Identify and explicitly handle payment-system edge cases
Maintain payment-system regression detection and uptime detection systems
Translate sketches, wireframes, and high-fidelity mockups into web and mobile applications
Deliver approachable, modern, tested, maintainable, and documented code
Work closely with product and engineering teams
Maintain development workflow using team tooling
Communicate via Basecamp, Slack, and video calls
Incorporate feedback and execute with quality and speed in an ambiguous environment
Use modern AI-powered techniques and approaches

Requirements

What you’ll need

7+ years of professional software engineering experience
Strong experience building and scaling production payments software
Deep understanding of backend architecture, APIs, databases, and distributed systems
Experience in FinTech, payments, banking, financial services, or transaction-heavy systems
Strong understanding of payment flows, transaction processing, webhooks, reconciliation, or financial integrations
Experience integrating third-party APIs and services such as payment processors, banks, or financial platforms
Strong experience with TypeScript/Node.js, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, and modern cloud infrastructure
Comfortable working across the stack, including React/React Native
Strong architectural instincts and pragmatic technical tradeoffs
Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills
Comfortable operating with a high degree of ownership and autonomy
Passion for the whole product process
Ability to use an iterative process to maintain momentum and continuously deliver valuable working software
Ability to leverage AI tools while observing and enforcing sound engineering principles
Effective communication with clients and teammates
Self-motivated, quick, and relentless learner
Curiosity about technology and its impact
Ability to take ownership and responsibility

Must be based in the United States
