About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Monitor schoolwide attendance, engagement, and compliance data to identify students in need of intervention and support
  • Run and analyze attendance, contact, and engagement reports to identify students requiring outreach, intervention, or welfare checks
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, counselors, and support staff to identify students at risk of disengagement, chronic absenteeism, withdrawal, or academic failure
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for students and families experiencing significant attendance, engagement, compliance, or intervention concerns
  • Conduct student and family outreach, intervention meetings, and follow-up conferences to support improved attendance, engagement, and academic success
  • Maintain ongoing communication and intervention support for students assigned to Tier II and Tier III attendance and truancy interventions
  • Participate in and support the school’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) processes, including intervention planning, implementation, and progress monitoring
  • Assist in the implementation and monitoring of Academic Improvement Plans and other school intervention initiatives
  • Participate in Truancy Board meetings and complete required follow-up activities, documentation, and intervention monitoring
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of attendance contracts, intervention plans, and probationary agreements as assigned
  • Complete welfare checks and coordinate outreach efforts for students identified as at-risk due to attendance, engagement, academic performance, or safety concerns
  • Support student retention and dropout prevention efforts through proactive outreach, intervention, and family engagement
  • Assist families through the student withdrawal process and support retention efforts when appropriate
  • Serve as a liaison between Tennessee Connections Academy and educational, residential, treatment, or correctional facilities to support student attendance, engagement, and continuity of services
  • Collaborate with school staff to identify and connect students and families with appropriate school and community resources
  • Support crisis response efforts, welfare investigations, and student safety concerns as assigned
  • Report and refer critical incidents that jeopardize student well-being as obligated by law, administrative regulations, or ethical standards
  • Assist with maintaining accurate records and documentation related to attendance, interventions, truancy, compliance, and student support services
  • Support schoolwide testing efforts, including student outreach, participation monitoring, and required travel for testing events
  • Support professional development activities for teachers and school staff members related to attendance, engagement, intervention, and student support practices
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Active Tennessee School Counselor License
  • Bachelor’s Degree in School Counseling, Counselor Education, School Social Work, or related field
  • Minimum three years of experience working with students and families in an educational setting
  • Experience in a public-school setting
  • Strong technology skills (especially with Microsoft Office products and Google Workspace)
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Highly organized and punctual
  • Customer-focused approach
  • High degree of flexibility
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced environment
  • Team player with demonstrated leadership skills
  • Ability to analyze and utilize student data to drive interventions and support student success
  • Ability to travel as requested for state testing events, school meetings, truancy court hearings, and student support activities (may require overnight travel)
  • Ability to work some occasional evening hours, as needed to support families
  • Ability to work remotely.
