About the role

  • Develop machine and process concepts in collaboration with Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering peers
  • Create robust control system architectures supporting robotics, PLCs, safety devices, HMIs, servo drives, and more
  • Work from initial design through commissioning, process fine-tuning, and validation to ensure reliable system operation
  • Specify, select, and program robotics systems for material handling, welding, material removal, assembly, inspection, and subtractive manufacturing
  • Write and debug PLC structured text; integrate PLCs with conveyors, robots, machine vision, and 3rd party equipment
  • Implement ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA-compliant safety systems for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, and high-volume equipment
  • Design, modify, and approve electrical schematics for manufacturing and test equipment compliant with NFPA79/NEC/UL508A
  • Generate simple, aesthetic HMI screens that provide sufficient troubleshooting feedback
  • Introduce automated processes into production and train Maintenance and Production teams for support
  • Create machine interactions with plantwide SCADA to communicate product acceptability, machine status, and process variables
  • Debug and optimize automated processes to maximize cycle time, availability, and yield
  • Characterize and validate automated processes using data-driven approaches and statistical tests (GRR, Cpk, etc.)
  • Create data management and tracking communications network architecture and interface with cross-functional teams for traceability control implementation

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering field is required
  • 6+ years' experience as controls engineer on complex electro-mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of assembly-level thermal/mechanical design considerations is a plus
  • Experience with control system architecture
  • Experience with rotating machinery, cable winding, soldering, and/or pipe bending
  • Experience with enclosure design compliant with NFPA79/NEC/UL508A standards
  • Experience working with job shops and external vendors
  • Ability to program and troubleshoot automation controllers in all IEC 61131-3 designated languages strongly desired
  • Ability to write and debug PLC structured text; produce organized, documented, maintainable, reusable code
  • Experience with control reliable safety systems for high volume manufacturing equipment (Compliant with ANSI/OSHA standards)
  • Experience specifying, selecting, and programming robotics systems and robot integration
  • Experience with machine vision, HMI, servo drives, and SCADA integration
  • Experience designing, modifying, and approving electrical schematics compliant with NFPA79/NEC/UL508A
  • High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly with excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Value for design for manufacturability, serviceability, and simplicity over complexity
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • Ability to perform typing, standing, stooping, and sitting for extended periods
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
