About the role
- Provide both technical leadership and strategic direction to Database Engineering teams
- Lead the design, implementation, and operation of enterprise database and data platforms across cloud and on-premises environments
- Ensure high availability, performance, security, and reliability of production database services
- Define and maintain technical standards, best practices, and operational processes
- Drive automation, DevOps, and modern engineering practices to improve efficiency and service delivery
- Plan workloads, projects, and resources to meet operational and strategic objectives
- Contribute to technology roadmaps and align database initiatives with organisational strategy
- Lead and develop the Database Engineering team to meet business needs
- Set clear goals, KPIs, and development plans, and manage performance effectively
- Recruit and retain talent in partnership with HR
- Foster a collaborative, safe, and high-performing team culture
- Manage departmental budget where applicable
Requirements
- Tertiary qualification in Computer Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
- 8+ years’ experience in data or database engineering, with 5+ years in a leadership or mentoring capacity
- Proven experience leading, coaching, and developing high-performing database or data engineering teams
- Strong capability in setting direction, defining priorities, and aligning team outcomes to business objectives
- Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders and collaborate effectively across technology and business teams
- Deep expertise in data engineering principles, ETL/ELT processes, and enterprise data solution design
- Extensive experience with enterprise data platforms, including on-premises databases and cloud data warehouses
- Highly organised with strong planning, prioritisation, and time management skills in fast-paced environments
- Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and clear written and verbal communication
