About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Build and lead a strategy for editorial events that expands CalMatters’ audience, elevates important California conversations, and strengthens the organization
  • Conceive, launch, and produce pillar events that become defining CalMatters experiences
  • Develop and test innovative storytelling, audience-participation, and interactive programming formats
  • Identify timely issues and recruit policymakers, experts, journalists, and community voices
  • Work with newsroom leaders and reporters to maintain editorial excellence and journalistic integrity
  • Bring CalMatters journalism to audiences beyond its existing readership
  • Introduce people to CalMatters and its nonprofit model in partnership with the membership team
  • Partner with the development team to create, market, and execute mission-aligned sponsorship opportunities
  • Manage budgets for the overall events business and individual events
  • Track audience growth, engagement, revenue, and overall impact
  • Supervise and work closely with the Events Manager
  • Report to the Editor in Chief as part of the editorial leadership team

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Significant experience producing high-quality live events, conferences, festivals, or public forums
  • Strong editorial instincts and deep understanding of journalism, current events, and civic engagement
  • Demonstrated ability to create original concepts that attract audiences and generate excitement
  • Experience working with journalists, public officials, executives, and other high-profile speakers
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with ability to manage multiple complex productions simultaneously
  • Experience developing sponsorship opportunities or partnering with fundraising, business development, or marketing teams
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, and leadership skills
  • Passion for CalMatters’ mission of delivering trusted, nonpartisan journalism
  • A college degree is not required
  • Resume, cover letter, and work samples if applicable required for application
  • Must answer application questions personally without AI or other automated tools
