About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Work closely with experienced engineers at Branch for 4–6 months
Brainstorm, design, code, debug, and ship features serving millions of customers
Build functionality for existing and new product lines and platforms, including Credit, Payments, KYC, and Data Platforms
Integrate with third-party systems, including payment systems, identity providers, and messaging platforms
Navigate and evolve existing architectures safely
Break down ambiguous projects into granular, estimable tasks
Collaborate with product, design, and other functions to shape work
Test, monitor, document, and take ownership of shipped code
Use AI tools responsibly to accelerate engineering workflows while managing security risks

Requirements

What you’ll need

Some experience building backend applications beyond toy projects
Applications with real users or an open-source project are a plus
Solid foundation in computer science fundamentals, distributed systems, and data storage
Familiarity with Unix variants and commonly used command-line utilities
Proficiency in at least one mainstream language such as Python, Ruby, Java, or Kotlin
Entrepreneurial initiative and experience starting or contributing to passionate projects
Strong collaboration and communication skills
Interest in working in a distributed company with teammates worldwide
Understanding of web fundamentals, data modeling, and distributed systems
Knowledge of modular, scalable design patterns
Awareness of security, performance, observability, and automated testing
Ability to navigate and evaluate unfamiliar codebases
Understanding of the full software development lifecycle
Ability to decompose ambiguous projects into granular, estimable tasks
AI fluency, including evaluating AI-generated code and mitigating prompt injection, data leakage, and secret-management risks
Ability to make high-velocity, high-quality decisions and work independently
Attention to detail, intellectual honesty, integrity, and ownership of shipped work
Ability to communicate in structured, async-friendly ways
