About the role

  • Serve as a key member of the development team delivering high-quality VFX for a new unannounced Blizzard game
  • Create, integrate, and optimize a variety of VFX assets for characters and environments using bleeding-edge techniques
  • Work closely with the lead VFX artist and collaborate with designers, artists, and engineers to deliver iconic VFX to AAA standards
  • Participate in team discussions, critiques, and reviews to ensure timely completion and quality of VFX assets
  • Apply skills in timing, value, motion, color, and form to add depth, mood, atmosphere, and gameplay impact
  • Uphold and champion VFX standards and best practices, keeping effect libraries organized, optimal, and efficient
  • Remain current on industry trends, commercial game engines, and workflow efficiencies
  • Operate in a dynamic environment, managing fluid deadlines and changing priorities

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in AAA VFX for games
  • Proven experience shipping a minimum of 2 major game titles in a relevant role
  • Experience working within a AAA game engine with implementation and pipeline integration knowledge
  • Strong understanding and experience with Unreal Engine and Niagara
  • Proficiency with Houdini (pyro, VAT, RBD, FLIP)
  • Experience with Axiom/Embergen
  • Proficiency in Substance Designer/Painter, Photoshop, and After Effects
  • Strong knowledge of shader authoring
  • Technical expertise constructing complex real-time VFX
  • Demonstrable critical eye for realism, weight, and timing
  • Expert understanding of VFX creation, industry-standard workflows, and bleeding-edge techniques
  • Portfolio with examples and detailed breakdowns showcasing practical work focused on realism
  • Ability to create high-fidelity assets and convert them into performant game assets
  • Experience solving complex pipeline problems and collaborating with engineers and technical artists
  • Team-oriented with strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Self-motivated, detail-conscious, positive and proactive problem-solving mindset
  • Extra points: experience with early development R&D phases; interest in real-world reference acquisition (photography/video); solid understanding of game art creation outside of VFX (concept, lighting, materials, animation, rendering)
  • Passion for playing a variety of video games
