About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Provide strategic state and local tax consulting services to middle-market and Fortune 500 clients
Manage multidisciplinary, multistate reviews covering income, franchise, sales and use, payroll, property, and other taxes
Identify filing options, exemptions, credits, incentives, and corporate structures to reduce client tax burdens
Research state tax issues, including nexus determinations, taxability analyses, and potential liabilities
Counsel clients on state and local tax controversies, draft correspondence and ruling requests, and support audit defense
Plan and execute tax projects, including due diligence and voluntary disclosure projects
Prepare technical memoranda on state and local tax issues
Maintain client communication, recommend business and process improvements, manage expectations, and enhance value
Assist with engagement staffing, billings and collections, and client profitability targets
Network and build relationships internally, externally, with clients, and with the community
Participate in firm-wide learning and development programs
Support team member growth through the Baker Tilly Care and Teach philosophy

Requirements

What you’ll need

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
Master’s in Taxation, LLM, CPA and/or JD certification required
10+ years of experience in state and local tax
5+ years of supervisory experience, mentoring and counseling associates desired
Experience as a client-serving professional for a consulting firm desired
Ability to lead and supervise others
Exceptional client service skills
Commitment to continuous learning and staying current on applicable strategies
Ability to understand both the big picture and details
Appropriate ethical knowledge and commitment
Sense of urgency and commitment to quality and timely project completion
