About the role

  • Lead a team of underwriting professionals for Middle Market Property & Casualty accounts
  • Oversee technical underwriting and account management targeting Real Estate, Hospitality, Manufacturing, and Healthcare industries
  • Collaborate with retail brokers to attract and retain accounts
  • Manage a portfolio of new and renewal business in accordance with strategy and profitability goals
  • Mentor and lead team in negotiating pricing, terms and conditions
  • Build and sustain meaningful broker relationships with consistent visibility and accessibility
  • Augment training conducted by Chief Underwriting Office and ensure team competency
  • Effectively manage referrals within underwriting authority in a timely fashion
  • Source, hire and performance manage employees to develop larger responsibilities

Requirements

  • Mentor and develop team members to profitably underwrite and manage their portfolio
  • Ensure underwriting decisions comply with governance framework including underwriting authority, pricing tools and rules and regulations mandated by Department of Insurance personnel
  • Stay apprised of changing market conditions to seize opportunities and minimize risk
  • Represent Arch Underwriters, Inc. and maintain positive broker and insured relationships
  • Establish positive working relationships with Operations, Engineering and Claims
  • Motivate and inspire team; model a culture of learning and development
  • Communication & Presentation skills (clear and concise written and verbal communication)
  • Influence skills to persuade and motivate others
  • Leading others: delegate and hold people accountable
  • Technical knowledge: utilize pricing tools and underwriting authority to make informed decisions
  • Four-year college degree (preferably Business, Economics or Legal)
  • Ten years prior underwriting experience in middle market or large commercial casualty underwriting business
