About the role

  • Act as lead counsel for assigned cases and projects, responsible for all research, filings, and other aspects of litigation
  • Research and develop novel legal theories and strategies for new cases
  • Manage drafting, editing, and submission of amicus curiae briefs
  • Work with Communications and other departments on civil legal issues and case content
  • Coordinate with other programs on cases with both civil and criminal components
  • Manage pro bono and local counsel on cases with external counsel
  • Prepare and deliver presentations for professional conferences and fundraising events
  • Provide in-house expertise for staff on litigation program cases and civil procedures

Requirements

  • At least five years of experience successfully developing and litigating significant cases or projects, ideally in strategic impact animal protection litigation or similar strategic impact litigation
  • Juris Doctor degree, excelled in law school, and be admitted to practice law in their state of residence
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to communicate effectively with members, supporters, co-workers, and other counsel
  • Positive attitude and ability to work cooperatively with others in a team-oriented work environment
  • Fully committed to the mission of the Animal Legal Defense Fund
  • Must travel as needed for litigation obligations or professional conferences, meetings, or other events
