About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Conduct secondary analysis of qualitative datasets
  • Examine hypotheses and generate insights into bioethical questions
  • Analyse data and produce outputs from the ongoing GHBN programme
  • Conduct comparative analyses with regional and national datasets
  • Support development of a local health bioethics community of practice with SARETI and other GHBN partners
  • Contribute approximately 20% of time to teaching and ethics support
  • Participate in research ethics committees
  • Supervise student dissertations
  • Develop independent research, including fellowship applications
  • Prepare and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals
  • Present research at conferences

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • PhD (awarded or pending results) in bioethics, law or philosophy, or a background qualification such as a Bachelor’s or Master’s in those disciplines
  • Excellent knowledge of ethics
  • Experience with secondary analysis of qualitative data
  • Ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary research teams and non-academic partners
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and to deadlines
  • Experience preparing and publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience presenting at conferences
  • Cover letter required
  • 1–2-page CV with detailed academic history required
  • Proof of academic records required
  • Primarily open to South African or other African applicants; valid work permit desirable
