About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design, develop, and rigorously test software applications and components
  • Apply best practices and cutting-edge technologies to support mission-critical research projects
  • Work across the research-to-implementation stack, including designing and evaluating AI models
  • Translate research findings into production-ready systems
  • Formulate and reason about constrained optimization problems
  • Support computational science research involving high-performance computing, AI/ML, modeling and simulation, and visualization
  • Collaborate with peers, mentors, team members, DOE program offices, defense and intelligence communities, federal agencies, universities, and industry partners
  • Perform technical tasks independently and adapt to different project needs
  • Support multiple projects and assist junior-level researchers and developers
  • Contribute to technical publications and proposal writing

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Professional Level III: relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5+ years of experience, or relevant Master's Degree and 3+ years, or relevant PhD; equivalent relevant education/experience may qualify
  • Professional Level II: relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2+ years of experience, or relevant Master's Degree; equivalent relevant education/experience may qualify
  • Must meet educational requirements before employment start date
  • Demonstrated experience with PyTorch and TensorFlow
  • Experience writing clean, efficient, maintainable code according to coding standards and guidelines
  • Experience designing, developing, and testing software applications and components using modern technologies
  • Knowledge of Python and at least one other major programming language, such as JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, or C/C++
  • Ability to communicate complex technical documentation of software architecture, design decisions, and technical specifications clearly and precisely
  • Effective communication skills for code reviews and constructive feedback
  • Willingness to consider alternative methods and adjust plans as circumstances evolve
  • Experience in a research lab environment
  • Technical publication experience
  • Proposal-writing experience
  • Ability to context-shift and support multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience supporting junior-level researchers and developers
  • Preferred: first-author publications
  • Preferred: open-source software releases
  • Ability to obtain a clearance
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card, including a favorable background investigation
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test
  • Must be authorized to obtain work authorization and facility access under DOE rules
  • Must disclose and potentially disengage from certain Foreign Government Talent Recruitment Programs
