About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own the performance, availability, and security of our database estate, ensuring production systems consistently meet SLA targets.
  • Plan and carry out scheduled maintenance, including out-of-hours patching, and support product deployments with schema change implementation across all environments.
  • Monitor system health, diagnose slow-running queries, and work with development teams to resolve performance issues and reduce technical debt.
  • Support and guide developers on good database design, and assist with approval and optimisation of DB change release processes.
  • Build and maintain repeatable, automated infrastructure and proactive monitoring for both production and non-production environments.
  • Manage data security, backup, archiving, replication, and disaster recovery - including regular DR testing.
  • Develop and support Dataflow and Datastream jobs to power data imports into our BigQuery data warehouse.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Solid hands-on experience in database administration with a focus on performance tuning, optimisation, and capacity planning.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS SQL Server and PostgreSQL, including TSQL, execution plans, and index optimisation.
  • Experience with CloudSQL (GCP), Flyway, and Terraform for infrastructure and schema management.
  • In-depth understanding of database security and data protection practices across multiple environments (e.g. GDPR, SOC 2 awareness).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a structured, methodical approach to diagnosing complex issues.
  • Strong communication skills - able to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Desirable: Background in infrastructure or IT operations.
  • Experience with GCP data products: Dataflow, Datastream, and BigQuery.
  • Familiarity with BI reporting tools and data warehousing / ETL design.
  • Working knowledge of Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Awareness of AI and machine learning concepts as they relate to data platforms.
