About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Own the performance, availability, and security of our database estate, ensuring production systems consistently meet SLA targets.
Plan and carry out scheduled maintenance, including out-of-hours patching, and support product deployments with schema change implementation across all environments.
Monitor system health, diagnose slow-running queries, and work with development teams to resolve performance issues and reduce technical debt.
Support and guide developers on good database design, and assist with approval and optimisation of DB change release processes.
Build and maintain repeatable, automated infrastructure and proactive monitoring for both production and non-production environments.
Manage data security, backup, archiving, replication, and disaster recovery - including regular DR testing.
Develop and support Dataflow and Datastream jobs to power data imports into our BigQuery data warehouse.

Requirements

What you’ll need

Solid hands-on experience in database administration with a focus on performance tuning, optimisation, and capacity planning.
Strong working knowledge of MS SQL Server and PostgreSQL, including TSQL, execution plans, and index optimisation.
Experience with CloudSQL (GCP), Flyway, and Terraform for infrastructure and schema management.
In-depth understanding of database security and data protection practices across multiple environments (e.g. GDPR, SOC 2 awareness).
Excellent problem-solving skills with a structured, methodical approach to diagnosing complex issues.
Strong communication skills - able to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
Desirable: Background in infrastructure or IT operations.
Experience with GCP data products: Dataflow, Datastream, and BigQuery.
Familiarity with BI reporting tools and data warehousing / ETL design.
Working knowledge of Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD pipelines.
Awareness of AI and machine learning concepts as they relate to data platforms.
