• Line management of Associate/Senior Editors.
• Supporting the chief editor in the day-to-day running of the journal.
• Handling original research papers and working closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review.
• Supporting the chief editor in shaping and implementing the journal’s editorial strategy.
• Liaising with editors at other journals in the Nature Portfolio family and with experts in the international scientific community.
• Commissioning Reviews and Comment articles and writing Editorials.
• Ensuring Production receives manuscripts in an appropriate and complete state.
• Other tasks as required.

Deputy Editor – Nature Communications

• Assist in the daily management of the journal workflow, with the objective of providing rapid, constructive peer-review and publication decisions
• Respond to authors, reviewers, EBMs, and readers in a timely fashion
• Work with the publishing team in the allocation of manuscripts to EBMs
• Liaise with EBMs on an ongoing basis to follow up on peer review and final decisions, ensuring decision policies are adhered to at all times by EBMs
• Resolve pre- and post- publication issues raised by staff, EBMs and readers (e.g. authorship, scope, ethics and consent, misconduct), including communication with authors and other stakeholders
• Support editorial and journal development activities
• Provide input into policy development initiatives and implement editorial policy as required
• Establish and maintain relationships with EBMs, including supporting initiatives to further improve engagement
• Manage recruitment and training of new EBMs where required
• Be an active member of the Springer Nature editorial community, engaging with editorial colleagues on other journals and driving collaboration on projects as necessary

Associate Editor, Humanities and Social Sciences Communications

• Support media outreach, communication campaigns, and external engagement activities
• Research media, creators, podcasts, and relevant platforms across global markets
• Draft and edit communication materials including pitches, talking points, and briefing notes
• Monitor media coverage, online discussions, and industry developments related to AI and technology
• Coordinate interviews, media requests, and communication follow-ups
• Help maintain communication assets, outreach trackers, and documentation
• Work closely with leadership and internal teams on external messaging and positioning
