About the role

  • Performs highly advanced maintenance and transportation engineering duties.
  • Responsible for the administration of management activities for maintenance field, contract development/inspection, permit issuance/inspection, shop, and warehouse operations.
  • Coordinates and directs programs and work needs for the permit and contract maintenance work groups.
  • Supervises and oversees subordinates in all phases of required work within the contract and permit work groups.
  • Motivates, trains, coaches and guides subordinate employees to improve the quality and quantity of work performed while conducting work activities.
  • Signs and seals plans and specifications packages.
  • Analyzes, evaluates, and directs programs and work needs for field crews and maintenance contract inspection for the maintenance unit.
  • Oversees all activities in the Maintenance Unit.
  • Has the authority to effectively recommend hiring, transferring, suspension, lay off, recall’s, promotions, discharges, assignments, rewards, or disciplinary actions for subordinate employees.
  • Plans and directs work loads, deadlines, work objectives, and time utilization with field managers and supervisors.
  • Manages the oversight and direction of the Department of Corrections crews and personnel.
  • Recommends production planning, scheduling, and control methods.
  • Directs cost control programs.
  • Formulates and recommends work procedures and develops new and improved work methods.
  • Consults with various municipalities.
  • Coordinates all unit maintenance duties and programs under the direction of the District Maintenance Engineer.
  • Answers correspondence and assures all documents meet Department rules and policies.
  • Maintains liaison with the public on matters concerning state maintained roads and bridges; addresses all concerns/complaints with diplomacy.
  • Coordinates all activities performed by the vehicle maintenance and repair facility, and warehouse.
  • Ensures that preventative maintenance services are correctly performed.
  • Makes field inspections of special projects.
  • Coordinates the study and evaluation of work needs that may be considered for Maintenance Contracts.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of leadership and management practices.
  • Knowledge of the correct use of English grammar and punctuation in communicating spoken and written business product.
  • Knowledge of conduct standards and disciplinary actions.
  • Knowledge of engineering design, construction, production and/or operations.
  • Knowledge of the budgetary process and procedures.
  • Knowledgeable of and skilled at contract administration procedures.
  • Knowledgeable of and skilled at safety procedures.
  • Knowledgeable of and skilled at understanding and applying applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Skilled in communicating effectively with the public, supervisors, and subordinates, including presentations, meetings, and written correspondence.
  • Skilled in the operation of personal computers, computer based systems, and programs.
  • Ability to lead, manage, and work with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to motivate subordinates.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems.
  • Ability to plan workloads, deadlines, and work objectives.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret engineering data.
  • Ability to supervise.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in accordance with Chapter 471 F.S.
  • Obtains and maintains certification in Work Zone Traffic Control and Maintenance – Advanced.
