About the role
- The Assistant Controller will play a steady, detail-focused role in building a best-in-class accounting department.
- Reporting directly to executive leadership, this position is well-suited for someone who values structure, accuracy, and consistent processes, and who is ready to grow into the Controller role as the company expands.
- This role will be hands-on: managing core accounting functions, establishing reliable procedures, and ensuring accuracy at every step.
- At the same time, it offers the opportunity to improve processes and develop systems that create long-term stability for the business.
- Carry out accounting functions with precision: A/P, A/R, payroll oversight, job costing, reconciliations, and month-end close.
- Establish clear month-end close procedures to achieve a consistent 5-day close timeline.
- Prepare and deliver clean, audit-ready financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, cash flow).
- Support leadership with reliable forecasting and cash flow tracking.
- Maintain accurate job cost records and implement a dashboard for real-time tracking.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with construction industry experience required (job costing, WIP reporting).
- Proficiency in construction accounting software (Deltek ComputerEase strongly preferred).
- Detail-oriented with a consistent, methodical approach to work.
- Demonstrated ability to implement process improvements and streamline workflows.
- Strong communication skills, integrity, and accountability.
- Desire and capacity to grow into the Controller role as Northstar continues to scale.
