About the role

  • Oversee and manage the General Ledger (GL) accounting team, which consists of accountants at varying levels. Determine day-to-day responsibilities of the team.
  • Lead and manage the monthly and year-end financial close processes, ensuring timeliness, accuracy, and compliance with GAAP. This includes completing and reviewing journal entries, account reconciliations (including intercompany accounts), trial balance reviews, and preparing financial reports.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain robust accounting policies, procedures, and checklists to ensure operational efficiency and strong internal controls (e.g., Accounting Operations checklist, GL team JE checklist).
  • Manage complex year-end closing activities, including but not limited to accruals (e.g., year-end overhead, bonuses, vacation), revenue recognition adjustments, deferred revenue, debt, equity compensation, tax provision coordination, and other specialized journal entries.
  • Maintain and update internal accounting documentation and resources (e.g., Accounting SharePoint page).
  • Review and approve ACH / wire transfers (ensuring proper segregation of duties and dual controls).
  • Support the annual external GAAP audit process, serving as a primary point of contact for auditors.
  • Support specialized audits, such as overhead rate audits (e.g., FAR, AASHTO, or state-specific).
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local financial regulations.
  • Continuously evaluate, develop, and implement strong internal controls across all accounting operations.
  • Key point of contact within the Accounting department related to system integrations of acquired businesses.
  • Develop Accounting and Finance work plan for system and accounting process integrations including timeline and key stakeholders for acquired businesses.
  • Work with an acquired entity Accounting team to gather data needed to assimilate into Apex accounting policies and processes.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the GL accounting team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment.
  • Set clear goals and expectations for team members and provide regular feedback and performance management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • CPA certification strongly preferred.
  • 5-8 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a management or supervisory role overseeing accounting operations.
  • Thorough knowledge of U.S. GAAP and experience applying principles to complex transactions.
  • Experience with overhead rate structures and government contract accounting (e.g., FAR, CAS) is a strong plus.
  • Proven experience leading financial close processes and managing external audits.
  • Specific experience with Deltek Vision/Vantagepoint (DVP) is highly desirable.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other MS Office Suite applications.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Strong leadership and team development capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization and external partners.
