About the role

  • You will care for patients before, during and after surgical procedures.
  • As a full member of the OR team, you ensure that the surgeons always have the necessary instruments and supplies at hand.
  • You are responsible for instruments and materials — for example, you will be in charge of sterilizing instruments after operations.
  • Your three-year apprenticeship alternates between classroom instruction and practical training and always begins on September 1.
  • You will learn how to support patients before, during and after surgical interventions.
  • You will become familiar with common surgical procedures, their workflows and possible complications.
  • You will learn the skills needed for pre- and post-operative preparation and intraoperative assistance, as well as various surgical techniques.
  • You will be able to operate specialized medical-technical equipment in the surgical area efficiently and safely.
  • You will understand important considerations for diagnostics and therapy.
  • You will perform responsible patient documentation.

Requirements

  • You are at least 17 years old.
  • You hold a Realschule certificate (intermediate secondary school diploma) or an equivalent school qualification, or you have successfully completed vocational training of at least two years, or you have permission to use the professional title “Krankenpflegehelfer/in” (nursing assistant).
  • A grade average of no worse than 3.0 in the natural science subjects.
  • An internship in an operating room prior to applying can be an advantage.
  • You can provide vaccination or immunity records for tetanus, mumps, measles, rubella, hepatitis B and chickenpox.
  • You must provide an extended certificate of conduct (erweitertes Führungszeugnis). (You will receive a letter from the employer to apply for this.)
  • Note for applicants with a migration background: we additionally require the following from you:
  • valid residence permit
  • proof of German language proficiency at level B2
  • certified translations of your certificates
  • recognition of your foreign school-leaving certificate by the Federal Republic of Germany
